201210 - PERMAFROST ALASKA Seis
Abstract
2012-07-15 to 2012-09-15
The project is a feasibility study whether marine permafrost layers can be detected with ambient noise analysis (cross correlations) recorded by shallow ocean bottom seismometers or hydrophones, respectively. The distribution of a submarine permafrost layer and its temporal variation is of interest in a climatological context. Underwater casings for CUBE recorders and sensors had been constructed, which shall be deployed in a ~3week period in the shallow water off the north coast of Alaska (USA). The marine instruments will be complemented by onshore stations to cover the land-sea transition.
